Chapter 8
Charlie tucked the blanket in more closely around Kenny’s shoulders and then gently patted him until the child fell back to sleep. He wished that the kids could be awake right now so that they could meet John Henry, but he also knew he had a lot of explaining to do and the kids didn’t need to be there for that. What he had to say was better said without little ears to hear it.
“So, this is where you ran off to, huh?”
Charlie spun around to find John Henry leaning against the doorframe, his hands casually pushed into his pant pockets. “Hey, John Henry,” Charlie said in a quiet whisper as he tiptoed across the room. He so didn’t want to wake the kids. They had had an eventful night and needed their rest. Cranky babies were not fun.
“Are you going to tell me what’s going on here, Charlie? Or do I have to guess?”
Charlie smiled. “I’ll explain everything to you downstairs. I just wanted to check on the kids before we talked, make sure they had gone to sleep. They’ve had a very exciting night, and they need a good night’s sleep.”
“Yes, I’m quite aware of how eventful their night was.” John Henry’s eyebrows pulled down into a deep frown. The corners of his lips curled down as well. “I was there.”
Charlie blew out a deep breath as he rubbed the back of his neck, suddenly feeling a whole lot of tension in his muscles. “I know, John Henry, and that’s why I thanked you out front. If you hadn’t been there, I doubt my children would be alive right now.”
Charlie could actually hear John Henry’s teeth grind together, and he knew the man was pissed. He reached out and grabbed John Henry’s wrist. “Please, just come downstairs so that I can explain everything to you.”
“I guess this means we’re not going to be able to have that dinner we discussed, are we?” And John Henry looked just as pissed about the loss of their plans for the evening as he did about the danger the children had been in.
Charlie shrugged as he pulled John Henry out of the children’s bedroom and down the hallway toward his own. “I don’t know about that. Nothing says we can’t arrive downstairs ten minutes later.”
“Just what did you have in mind, marine?”
Charlie grinned as he crooked his finger at John Henry. “Why don’t you come with me, Sheriff, and I’ll show you how a marine gets down and dirty?”
“Charlie.”
Charlie could tell that John Henry was reluctant. The man really wanted to know what was going on. It must be the law enforcement official in him because the man in John Henry was hard as a rock. If John Henry’s pants got any tighter, the seams would bust.
With that in mind, Charlie quickly changed directions and pulled John Henry into the nearest bathroom. He shut and locked the door and then leaned back against it, his hands resting on the cold wood between his lower back and the door.
